Problem

Do colors or shapes help someone remember a sequence better?

 

Purpose

If you were going to build a device with only 6 keys would it be easier for the user if the keys were labeled with shapes or colors to unlock and use?

Definitions

Sequence: A particular order in which related events, movements, or things follow each other: the content of the program should follow a logical sequence.

 

Memory:  A person’s power to remember things; I’ve a great memory for faces.

 

Test Cards: For my experiment I will call the cards that have a sequence on them test cards.

 

Materials

• 6 Colors of cardstock
• 10 pieces of plain white cardstock (8.5×11”) for test cards
• Stopwatch/timer
• Copy paper (8.5×11”) for log sheet
• Printer
• Glue

 

 

Procedure

 

1. Divide the cardstock into 2 groups of 5

2. Cut the colored cardstock into 6 1.5×1” rectangles. Place 6 of each color in random sequences on the white cardstock, save the extra cards.

3. For the shapes, print out sequences on the other group of cardstock, print 1 extra and cut around the shapes to make the shape cards to rearrange

4. Write the numbers 1-5 on the back of each card in the colors group and 1-5 on the back of the shapes

5. Print a recording sheet to the copy paper.

6. To test someone show them the test cards in order from colors 1-5 then shapes 1-5 but only show the card to the test subject for 5 seconds then make them wait 5 more seconds before they can re-arrange the cards (this is why you needed the extra card) then record their answer

7. Create an answer sheet to help you grade the sheets (make sure to put it in order)

8. To get the results grade the sheets then record on final sheet
